There are numerous removable partial dentures available, making it easier to replace a single or several missing teeth. Missing a tooth comes with many challenges like difficulty while eating or speaking. Your smile will also be affected since you won’t be able to smile naturally or with full confidence. Fortunately, a dentist or a tooth replacement dental professional, referred to as a prosthodontist, can create a modified appliance to replace the missing teeth and bring back your smile. However, since there are many types of removable partial dentures, you should know all your options before making a decision.

What Are Removable Partial Dentures?

Before going deeper into various types of removable partial dentures currently available, it’s essential to know the basics. Removable partial dentures are dentures used in patients that have lost a few teeth and for any reason can’t have a fixed partial denture or so-called bridge. This can be due to the lack of teeth that are used for support or because of financial reasons. A removable partial denture is placed on the gums and can be inserted and removed without the help of a dental professional.

What Are the Types of Removable Partial Dentures?

There are 3 types of most commonly used today:

  • Acrylic tissue-supported dentures
  • Dentures with cast metal frameworks
  • Semi precision attachments

Even though technology has drastically evolved and fixed dentures are much more affordable than before, there’s still a pretty high demand for partial dentures all over the world.

What to Expect if You Decide to Get Removable Partial Dentures

What to Expect if You Decide to Get Removable Partial Dentures

When you get your dentures made, the dentist will probably recommend that you wear them all the time. You’ll probably want to remove them from time to time, but taking the advice will make you get used to them much quicker! You’ll also identify the parts of the dentures that need adjusting so they’ll fit perfectly!

Eating could most likely present a challenge at first. Many people don’t have the confidence to eat while having removable partial dentures, so taking things slowly and getting used to chewing should be your top priority. You’ll need to start with softer foods until you feel confident enough to move on to harder food such as apples or meat.

One more thing to expect, and it’s for all types of partial dentures, is that you’ll need to visit the dentist for adjustments from time to time. Teeth are used to hold the jaw in place and keep its form. After losing some teeth, you’ll notice that your jaw will start changing which will lead to the dentures not fitting properly.

You’ll also need to get used to a different type of routine when it comes to oral hygiene. Using regular toothpaste on removable dentures isn’t recommended because it can damage them!
