Dental Bridges Q & A

What are dental bridges?

A dental bridge is a restoration treatment that replaces missing teeth. Your dentist affixes the bridge with a dental crown on the adjacent natural teeth, creating an unbroken expanse of teeth, effectively “bridging” the gap in your smile.

Dental bridges are used to replace a single missing tooth or several. There are even options that replace a back molar, requiring only one dental crown to secure the bridgework.

Bridges consist of one or more artificial crowns, attached to a metal or plastic framework. Some options include a metal wire to provide additional support, but the only structures you see once the bridge is in place are the custom crowns.

Why choose dental bridges over implants or partial dentures?

Dental implants offer a permanent tooth replacement option. Durable and attractive, implants also preserve bone health by continuing the daily stimulation your jawbone needs to thrive. However, getting dental implants requires a substantial volume of bone tissue, and not everyone can get implants without first having bone grafting.

Implants are also more expensive than bridges, and require a lengthy waiting period between post placement and having the crown attached. Bridgework takes less time and is more affordable.

Partial dentures deliver a similar visual effect as a dental bridge, but dentures are removable. This means that they can shift while in your mouth, as opposed to bridgework which remains firmly in place when you talk, bite, or chew.

You also have to remove dentures to perform oral hygiene routines. With a bridge, you simply brush your teeth normally, making only minor adjustments to your flossing routine.

How can I take good care of my dental bridge?

Fortunately, you don’t have to overhaul your daily habits to maintain a beautiful and functional dental bridge.

Take good care of your dental bridge by avoiding biting down on hard, non-food items. Don’t chew ice, and never try to pry or move your dental bridge.

Simply care for your bridgework the same way you care for your natural teeth, and reach out to the Gables Sedation Dentistry office if you notice any changes.
