How to make the most of your veneers

Your veneers have a life expectancy of about 10 to 15 years, and with proper care and a little luck, they could last longer still. Getting the most from your veneers means making a few small adjustments for the best appearance and function. Consider these veneer care tips as well as following our instructions at the time of treatment.

1. Maintain an effective oral hygiene routine

The buildup of plaque and tartar that threatens your natural teeth affects veneers too. Continue to brush twice a day and floss once a day to combat tooth decay and gum disease. Veneers cover only one surface of your visible teeth, so your natural enamel remains exposed.

2. Switch mouthwash

If your mouthwash contains alcohol, switch to a different formula without it. Alcohol weakens the cement that bonds veneers to your teeth, so you can extend the life of your veneers by limiting their exposure to alcohol, starting with your mouthwash.

3. Reduce discoloring agents

You can choose the whiteness of your veneers to match existing teeth or to chase the Hollywood smile ideal. The choice is yours, but know that, like natural tooth enamel, your veneers can dull down when you smoke or consume staining food and drink. Steer away from things like wine, soy sauce, tomatoes, coffee, and tea.

4. Limit hard foods

In hot weather, chewing ice might be a habit that cools you down, but it risks damaging or dislodging your veneers. Similarly, hard or sticky candy is a treat, as are nuts and popcorn. Reduce your consumption or take extra caution when enjoying these treats.

5. Guard against bruxism

A common reaction to stress, grinding your teeth can happen anytime. It’s most problematic at night, since you can’t simply stop when you’re asleep.  Our dentists may recognize signs of bruxism during your regular exams and we can fit you with a night guard to protect your teeth and veneers while you get the stress-busting relief that sleep provides.
