General sedation dentistry is becoming very popular in the dentistry world. Not only does it take away the anxiety of going to the dentist, but it also makes routine procedures safer and easier. However, when it comes to children, is it safe? At Gables Sedation & Family Dentistry, we say – Yes, it is!

If you have ever experienced anxiety about going to the dentist, you have probably undergone or considered sedation dentistry. For those who have not, sedation dentistry is when a dentist, like our Miami dentists at Gables Sedation & Family Dentistry, administers a sedative, such as nitrous oxide or general anesthesia, to perform a dental treatment safely and effectively.

Regardless of whether or not you have undergone sedation dentistry, when your child is presented with a procedure involving sedation dentistry, you may have some concerns.

Is sedation dentistry safe for your child or children?

Sedation Safety

At Gables Sedation & Family Dentistry, we say, yes. Sedation dentistry is safe for children when monitored by one of our professional Miami dentists.

Children anxious or fearful of going to the dentist may obstruct their treatment, which could lead to larger problems for them as time goes on. When one of our professional Miami dentists administers a sedative, the child’s anxiety will reduce and they will be calm and relaxed during the procedure.

Types of Sedation

At Gables Sedation & Family Dentistry, we offer four types of sedatives for dental treatment. Three of them are conscious sedation and the other is unconscious sedation. All treatments with sedation are carefully monitored.

Conscious Sedation

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is popularly known as “laughing gas.” When one of our Miami dentists administers nitrous oxide, the child will become relaxed, but conscious enough to respond to physical requests. Once treatment is over, the nitrous oxide will leave the body and the child will return to their normal state.

Oral Sedative

Gables Sedation & Family Dentistry will prescribe an oral sedative for the child to take before their treatment. Similar to nitrous oxide, the child will be relaxed before the treatment even starts. Sometimes we use nitrous oxide to enhance the calming effects, if necessary. After the procedure, the sedative gradually leaves the body.

IV Conscious Sedation

If the procedure calls for it, our caring Miami dentists will administer a powerful sedative intravenously. The child will be completely relaxed during the procedure and may not remember anything about the treatment after it is done. After the procedure, the child must be taken home to relax until all of the sedative leaves the child’s system.

Unconscious Sedation

General Anesthesia

Our anesthesiologist administers general anesthesia for any treatment that requires it. The child will be unconscious during the procedure.

Every patient’s comfort and care is our top priority at Gables Sedation & Family Dentistry. Children are no exception. If your children or your child have any dental needs, come see one of our Miami dentists today. Our Miami orthodontists also provide quality orthodontic care.
